All you need to know about the vaccination passport and the digital green certificate that the EU is preparing for this summer.
More than a year after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is undeniable that the desire to return to normal, within the limits allowed, is always strong. For this reason, many nations of the world are preparing to make not only everyday life but also travel as safe as possible, through the use of a certification that certifies the health of travelers, such as, for example, the vaccination passport . But what are the different documents in the program and how do they work? Let’s see it together.
A vaccination certificate for COVID-19
Generally speaking, a passport or vaccination certificate is a document in digital or paper format that proves that the holder:
- vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2, or
- has already contracted the virus and overcome the disease by acquiring the antibodies necessary to counter it (demonstrable through a serological test) or
- tested negative on the molecular or rapid antigen test and therefore does not represent a risk of contagion for others.
Not being bound exclusively to the administration of the vaccine, therefore, it would be technically improper to call it a vaccine certificate, as it would be more generally a certificate of good health. In any case, the objective of this type of document is to allow you to resume traveling, both within a country and on an international scale, and to eliminate or otherwise limit restrictions in public and meeting places such as restaurants, cinemas and facilities. sportsmen.
What is the digital green certificate proposed by the EU?
The European Union is planning to create a centralized digital green certificate (the so-called digital green certificate or green pass ) to allow citizens of member states to move freely between the EU countries, Iceland, Norway, Lichtenstein and Switzerland without carrying out any quarantine.
As mentioned above, to obtain the certificate it will be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant has been vaccinated, has obtained negative results in a swab test carried out recently or has recovered from acute respiratory disease from Sars-CoV-2019 (demonstrable through a serological test).
The European green certificate will certify the conditions of the citizen via QR code and will be valid in all EU countries. It will be possible to request it free of charge in digital format (usable from a mobile device) and / or paper, in the national language and in English.
The document will include the following data:
- first name
- date of birth
- release date
- information about vaccination, testing or recovery from infection
- unique identifier.
Digital green certificate: when and where will it be possible to request it?
A certain date has not yet been defined for the implementation of the digital green certificate, but the European Commission plans to prepare for the issue and set up the necessary digital infrastructure by the arrival of summer . The responsibility for issuing the certificate will lie with the national authorities, i.e. hospitals, testing centers and health authorities .

The COVID-19 pass in Italy
On April 21, the Council of Ministers approved the so-called ” Reopening Decree “, which starting from April 26 eased the restrictive measures currently in force to prepare the country for the first reopening.
This decree also provides for the introduction of COVID-19 green certifications, which will allow you to move freely between Italian regions even if they are orange or red areas. As with the other passes described above, the green certificate can be requested by anyone who can demonstrate vaccination or recovery from the infection or who has performed a molecular swab or rapid test with negative results in the last 48 hours.
How long does the COVID-19 pass last?
The COVID-19 pass has a duration of 6 months starting from the moment in which the course of vaccinations is completed or the recovery from the infection has been certified.
